Kukosha Trust
About Kukosha Trust
Kukosha Trust is a non-profit, faith-based organisation, which is based in Harare, Zimbabwe and serves vulnerable children and families. Kukosha, which means something unique and individual, started in 2013 with the aim of supporting the priority of family-based care for orphans and vulnerable children in Zimbabwe, through family strengthening and preservation activities. With this goal in mind, all our programs are aimed at preventing children from being separated from their parents and family of origin, and where needed, promoting and supporting foster care and adoption options that ensure every child has opportunity to grow up in a safe and loving family. This is done through five primary initiatives as follows:
1. Food security for high risk infants and children, by providing formula and food packs.
2 Educational support for children without access to schooling.
3 Capacity building opportunities for kinship and foster families, aimed at improving financial security and long term outcomes of children.
4. Supporting Teen Mothers through a Safe House, and a Peer Support group for those living in local communities.
5. Adoption and Foster Care advocacy. This includes parent training and support groups such as Second Mother.
The Austen Family is at the centre of this fully Zimbabwean ministry which has been serving children in Zimbabwe for more than thirty years. As the needs and opportunities have grown in that time, Kukosha has remained positioned and able to not only meet physical needs such as food, medical and education security, but also to be a source of collaboration and community to many. As a registered foster family, the Austens have cared for dozens of children in need of safety, as well as infants waiting to be adopted. Their home is always full, not only of children but of noise and activity and joy and hope! Sue Austen has served in various ministries over the last three decades and brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the work. With a deep sense of calling and purpose this family is committed to serving and loving the children of their nation.
Current and consistent needs.
Formula and food.
Girl House expenses.
School fees.
Rentals and salaries.
Our Dreams.
Teen mums.
We would like to rework our model of care for the girls and potentially have two homes, one as a transition as they prepare for independent living with their children. We would be need to secure additional funding for the girls’ education and /or training in this time.
Revolving Fund.
We would love to have a fund in place that would support the training and empowerment of our single women caring for children. Business training and financial education followed by a short-term loan to jumpstart a small business or project. As the monies are repaid, we can identify another group of women to work with.
Permanent Housing.
Ownership of a house for the girls. Owning a house in a high-density location for this purpose rather than continuing to rent.
A newer vehicle for the work.
